– stripping surfing back down to its most elemental form

The New Yok Surf Film Festival

Surf themed film festivals are popping up all over surfdom recently – the most recent arrival being the New York Surf Film Festival. The festival will take place at the Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan from September 26-28. It would seem that the surge in film festivals is paralleled to surfing’s increased public growth. However, this may not necessarily be the case.

Unlike the commercial agenda driven editorial direction of most of the surf print and “video” media, the festivals feature more abstract and sometimes thoughtful representations of surf culture. Another common theme in the surf film festival is the environment, as was the central theme of the Surfilm Festibal in Spain earlier this year.

The NY Surf Film Festival will not disappoint. Some of the films to keep an eye out for are Musica Surfica, Under the Sun, Sliding Liberia, Bustin Down the Door, and Bonzer: The Mothership. New York is one of the cheapest destinations to fly to from anywhere in North Amercia so I expect to see a whole heap of you there.

Luckily, your intrepid Phoresia gonzo journos will be there dirtbag style to see what’s in store and chat up some of the filmmakers and festival organizers. We’ll also try and go for a surf and get a couple of carves in on the fabled brick Brooklyn Banks. So if you live in NYC and want to let us bum a couple of surfboards for Saturday morning we’d be thrilled.
